Château Ferriere 1998 Margaux Grand Cru Classé 0,75L 12,5% Vol. Alc.

Château Ferrière is a wine estate in the Bordeaux appellation of Margaux. It produces red blends dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and was ranked third in the 1855 Médoc and Graves classification. It has 18 hectares of vines, most of which are located in the village of Margaux itself, making it one of the smallest of the classified estates. The estate was founded and named after Gabriel Ferrière, a member of the court of King Louis XV and wine merchant in Bordeaux in the 18th century. The Ferrière family owned the estate until 1914, after which it changed hands several times, and for several decades in the mid-20th century the wine was made exclusively at Château Lascombes. The wine was vinified exclusively at Château Lascombes until the end of the 20th century. In 1988, it was bought by the Villars family, who own several other wine estates, including Château Haut-Bages Libéral in Pauillac. In 2013, extensive renovation work was carried out to modernise the winemaking facilities. The vineyard is planted on soils with deep gravel deposits from the nearby Garonne River over limestone marl. The majority is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, with some Merlot and small quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. A second wine is made from a 2-hectare plot of younger vines, which is labelled Ramparts de Ferrière.
