Château Lassègue is a wine estate in the Saint-Émilion appellation in the north-east of Bordeaux, owned by the Santa Rosa-based Jackson Family Wines. The estate was named Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion classification in 2022. The château is located four kilometres south-east of the town of Saint-Émilion on a gentle, south-west facing slope (known as the Côte de Saint-Émilion) overlooking the flatter land that runs down to the Dordogne river to the south. The history of the castle dates back to the 17th century and was once a château. However, the château's modern history dates back to 2003, when it was purchased by Californian winemakers Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke. They hired Pierre and Nicolas Seillan, a father and son team with connections to south-west France and California, to run the estate. The estate covers 36 hectares (89 acres) with 24 hectares (60 acres) of vineyards. The vineyards are south and south-west facing, giving the fruit ample sunshine to reach physiological ripeness. The vineyards consist of chalk, clay and limestone soils and are planted with 60 per cent Merlot, 35 per cent Cabernet Franc and five per cent Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields are limited, as the vines are between 40 and 55 years old, and the final composition of the wines generally reflects the proportion of grape varieties planted on the property. The Château's flagship wine, Lassègue, is produced from vines planted mainly on limestone slopes. The Merlot-dominated blend matures for 12 months in 50 to 70 per cent new French oak barrels, which are specially selected by Pierre Seillan - in the cellar, the barrels are not branded by cooper, but by forest.
