Le Marquis de Calon Ségur 2014 Saint - Estèphe 0,75L 14,5% Vol. Alc.

Château Calon-Ségur is a renowned wine estate in the commune of Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde estuary in the north of Bordeaux. The château was classified as a third growth in the 1855 Médoc and Graves classification and is unique in the Médoc as the vineyards are located in a single plot surrounded by high stone walls. The second wine, Marquis de Calon, consists mainly of Merlot and is aged in barrels, only a third of which are new. The production is much higher than that of the Grand Vin, and it is made from younger vines and brought to market younger. The Grand Vin is matured in new oak, refined with egg white and produced in relatively small quantities - 80,000 bottles - per year. The top wine of the same name (often referred to as "grand vin") is a red Bordeaux blend, but is predominantly made from Cabernet Sauvignon. In some years, the proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon can be as high as 90 per cent. Viticulture here dates back to the 12th century, but the name Calon-Ségur first appears in the 18th century. At that time, the château was owned by Nicolas-Alexandre, the Marquis de Ségur, who also owned the Châteaux Latour, Lafite and Margaux. The Marquis decided to give the château his name and add the word Calon, the name of the small boats that once transported timber on the Gironde. Not only did he change the name of the estate, but he also put a heart on the label of his wine after he became famous: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart belongs to Calon". The vineyards of Calon-Ségur are planted on clay and gravel soils, which lend strength and finesse to the finished wines. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon dominates in the wines, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are also planted, providing opportunities for blending.
